Banks Peninsula and Akaroa Tour (Day tour: 8½-9 hours)
$145 ($216 incl. Akaroa harbour cruise)
The Banks Peninsula and Akaroa small-group day tour from Christchurch is full of interest for the nature lover, and reveals the area's rich human history. Although Akaroa is the destination, this tour is more than just a return trip to Akaroa. For many people, the highlight is getting off the main tourist routes and visiting several of the quiet and remote bays of the peninsula.
The tour includes:
Views of Lyttelton Harbour from the Port Hills.
A gentle meander over the scenic roads of Banks Peninsula, the remnants of two once great volcanoes. Now extinct, they have weathered down to form some of New Zealand’s prettiest landscapes - high craggy hills dissected by deep valleys and long blue bays.
We visit a remote bay on a lovely coast, well off the tourist path. A perfect place for morning tea!
Wander around charming Akaroa, founded by French colonists, and now one of New Zealand’s most picturesque seaside towns. It still has many late nineteenth century colonial cottages.
You may optionally take the two-hour Akaroa Harbour Nature Cruise to view high sea cliffs and marine wildlife. Hector’s dolphins, the world's rarest marine dolphin, are seen on most cruises. You may also see New Zealand fur seals and little White-flippered Penguins.
Alternatives to taking the Nature Cruise include a relaxing hands-on sailing cruise on a 14-metre 'A-Class' yacht, a short guided forest walk in a nature reserve, or just exploring Akaroa in your own time.
- If time permits, we visit the wild stony beach at Birdlings Flat.
