Since the earthquake of 22 February 2011, accommodation is very scarce in Christchurch's CBD. There is currrently little hotel space available in the city, although this is starting to improve with some reopenings. Many visitors are choosing to stay in motels.
The first hotel to reopen in the CBD. It is handy to the 'Re:Start Mall' shopping area and the Avon River, and is within 10 minutes walking of attractions such as the Botanic Gardens and Canterbury Museum.
This hotel is set in gardens across the road from Hagley Park, and about 20-30 minutes walking across the park to the city centre. Reasonably handy to shops and restaurants in the suburb of Riccarton.
There is a strip of good motels in Papanui Road. About 20-25 minutes walking to the city centre in one direction, and 5-10 minutes walking in the other direction to the Merivale shopping centre where there are several good restaurants and cafes. Recommended motels include:
A friendly family-run motel in Riccarton, if you prefer a quiet street in a good neighbourhood - yet only 5-10 minutes walking from Riccarton Mall, as well as to Riccarton House and Riccarton Bush
Luxury bed and breakfast in a lovely refurbished historical mansion, with a warm welcome from hosts Ann and Harold. About 15 minutes distance from the central city and gardens
You are warmly hosted in a beautifully restored heritage house, in the heart of the city and just a few minutes walking to central city attractions.
